There are a few sites, not many, around, or still around that was there when I started to use the internet in the 90s, TidBITS is one of them. Sites come and go, while some just stay the same year after year, TidBITS is one of them.

Patrick Rhone:

My Grandmother was a piano teacher. She was also a world renowned concert pianist. She was awarded her Ph.D. in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa. She was also a freedom fighter, quite active in the civil rights movement in the south. She was also the author of three books about the life of a blind pianist named Blind Tom Wiggins. She was on the Board of Trusties at Dillard University for many years. She was a college professor at the University of Minnesota for about thirty years and Chair of her department for ten of those.

My life have been a combination of luck, and just doing what excited me. And I hope I can continue to do that for the rest of my life. I believe that it is important to do things you can be proud of. That is one of the reasons I moved from Stavanger in 2012, I was sick of doing work for companies that worked for the Oil & Gass sector.

Do the kind of things you can be proud of.

20 great journaling questions.

22.04.2015 02:00

I’m not a huge fan of lists. No that’s not true, I have 99.9% of them. But this one is good.

It is a great list of questions for people that journal, people that want to get started, and it might even inspire some people to start journaling.

Above Avalon

We now find ourselves in a world where cameras are becoming ever more capable in a smaller footprint. Apple’s LinX acquisition is all about multi-aperture cameras, suggesting the desire to fit more power in a smaller form factor using sensors and software to capture multiple images simultaneously. The result is better quality, and more importantly, depth and three-dimensional capabilities.

This looks interesting, and it might be the next big thing to push phone photography to the next level. But I’ll probably stick with my huge Canon DSLR.

Daring Fireball

I think John is right, it took Apple a long time to allow custom wallpapers on iOS, four years, and four major OS releases, before we got it. But this seems so much worse than a ugly wallpaper, and Apple rarely lets us modify the interface of their products more than they have to. And custom watch faces isn’t something they have to.

They might do it in the future, but I don’t think so.

Easier than ever to have private conversations | Twitter Blogs

Direct messages from anyone? This is a terrible idea. Many people, including me have had the feeling for a while that the people in charge of twitter neither use or get the service.

Facebook.

22.04.2015 02:00

Facebook used to have just one mobile app, one on iOS and a similar one on Android. Then they bought a company, and suddenly they had two, one regular app, and a Messenger app. Some people love it, while others hate it.

I think Facebook’s Messenger platform is one of the best messenging platforms out there, especially now that we have a web-version of it, for laptops and desktops.

The number one complaint about Facebook app is that they removed the messenging functionallity from their app. I think it was a great move, just because the messaging functionallity in their regular app was so terrible. It was never good.

I’m a weird Facebook user, I use the Messanger app a lot, but I don’t use Facebook itself for much.

Facebook is a platform, and Messanger is also a platform; and Facebook need to innovate in both to keep growing. It seems like a new version of what we called IM 17 years ago, and IRC before that is the “hot” thing at the moment.

We don’t really do much new, it’s just a new version of something old. Or like a lot of people summarize the history of philosophy: it’s just a bunch of footnotes to Plato.
