Apple Magic Trackpad 2 review – Six Colors

14.10.2015 02:00

I love the Magic Trackpad. And as of today, with the arrival of the Magic Trackpad 2, the Magic Trackpad is bigger and better than ever.

It is a good refinement of the first good pointing device for a desktop, at least in my opinion. A trackpad, or a good one, and Apple is the only company that have made a good one, is very natural and intuitive, compared to all the others.

Building Twenty — Overcast’s not-quite-predatory pricing

14.10.2015 02:00

Overcast 2.0 is out and it’s completely free. No more paywall.

Great news, right? Everyone likes free stuff. And Overcast is a fantastic app.

But imagine you’ve been working on Castro 2 for the last year, betting the company on a big launch and a sustainable income. Imagine you’re a developer with an idea for a podcast app so revolutionary the app icon doesn’t even contain an allusion to a radio transmitter.

Fair point, but I think there is a time and place for the different business models out there. What I mean by that is that some models are better for an app early on than later. The fact that there is a fantastic app available for free does make it harder, but I do believe that the market for podcast app will remain big enough for at least two or three paid alternatives, including Overcast.

In the prior s-cycle, the iPhone 5s was introduced alongside the unapologetically plastic iPhone 5c. A move that – to many – felt unorthodox. As we know now, a 6c was not announced this year and even though it had been rumored, I’d wager that those were patterned guesses.

A fantastic post about the iPhone 5c

Pragmatic app pricing – Marco.org

This time, I’m not too worried about Pocket Casts and Castro. Well, a little — that instinct never fully leaves a person. But even after Pocket Casts ships their silence skipper and volume booster shortly on iOS and Castro 2 comes out with a far nicer UI than I could ever imagine, they have their users, I have mine, and we’ll all be fine. We have much bigger problems than each other.

Podcasts are hot right now. Big Money is coming.

How to write a support request – BrettTerpstra.com

Most of the software I produce is free, but I try to provide the most helpful answers I can without draining all of my time. With my commercial software, such as Marked 2 and StretchLink, I strive to provide excellent responses to all queries. There are a few things that help me (and any software developer/company) provide that quickly and pleasantly.

This is something everyone should read.

Overcast 2.0

12.10.2015 02:00

Overcast is my podcasting app of choice, and have been since it came out a little bit over a year ago, and version 2.0 came out a few days ago. It introduces streaming, and a new and interesting business model: free with the option to pay, if you want to.

Marco:

The headlining feature of Overcast 2 is streaming. You can still download all episodes as you did before — I fixed some bugs there, too

Great app, great update. You should check out the Macstories review if you want a in-depth article about more or less every single detail.

The Brooks Review

12.10.2015 02:00

A common refrain when people try to encourage others to buy mobile apps is to say things like: look your Starbucks “latte” cost you $4 and you will finish it inside of 30 minutes (one hopes), but this app is $1.99 and you will use it for months — if not years. Clearly the better value is the app, not the Starbucks.

Fantastic. Comparing App prices to cups of coffee is a a bad idea, and this article explains exactly why.
