Doom Emacs Reference

April 06, 2018

I couldn’t find any documentation of the command available, except for in the editor, so I mapped it out.

Org-mode versus Taskapaper.

April 06, 2018

I love Org-mode and I love Taskpaper. But I like each one for different reasons.

Taskpaper as a file format works much better for me, than the org-mode format. But I think org-mode as a piece of software is much more powerful and is much better when it comes to management. In other words: I prefer writing in the taskpaper format, but org mode is more fun to use.

I have written a very simple python script to convert taskpaper formatted text to org-mode formatted text in order to make it a little bit easier for me to use both.

I’m digging Doom Emacs. My config is not ready for day to day usage yet. But I’m confident I’ll get it there soon.

Why am I considering to switch from Spacemacs?

  • Prettier
  • Easier Layer/module system
  • Faster in general: both in terms of startup and general usage.

But I think it is a little bit harder to get into than Spacemacs, and keyboard shortcuts etc are different.

Ahh. The reason mu4e was weird on Doom was that I had to install evil-mu4e.

Mac OS X is the old, and iOS is the new.

I often see people saying “X is solved with Y on OS X, I hope Apple will support it”, and I’m pretty sure that it won’t happen at this point. There might show up something like Y that solves it, but it will not me the same. And probably not as flexible.

That’s just how it will be.

iOS is not the kind of computing I enjoy. And I will hopefully be able to work on a UNIX system or a UNIX like system for a very long time. But it is not the future.

Newsletters

April 04, 2018

I have multiple times in my life made a real effort to limit the amount of e-mail I receive. And I have tried all kinds of different approaches to how to limit it. For example spending hours subscribing for everything in one go. And I have scheduled a slow each day or week to remove one of a few.

The most efficient approach for me is to sit down once a week and remove ten. I just search for “unsubscribe” and remove ten. And then I do the same next week. The reason I think this approach is good is because then you identify those who have sent you emails recently. And you also have the choice of keeping the newsletter you enjoy.

I only mark emails as spam and blacklist them after making a real effort to get rid of them.
