The Brooks Review

December 06, 2015

Ben Brooks:

But here’s the thing: WordPress just keeps working where as the other two I have been playing with keep breaking each time I update OS X. You see Apple loves to screw around with the PHP setup in OS X with each update, and typically I end up losing mcrypt when I update OS X. I’ve got it down to a science to get that back, but when it happens both Statamic and Grav go down --- and I don’t just mean any back ends, I mean the entire sites go down --- until I fix things.

WordPress is the best solution to host your own dynamic CMS, I personally prefer Squarespace or Jekyll. The reason I prefer Jekyll when I host myself is because it runs as long as the web server can serve HTML files.

iPad Pro Review

December 06, 2015

A fantastic review. You want the guy that uses his iPad for everything to review the iPad Pro, you know a pro user: Viticci is the pro user.

Daring Fireball

November 12, 2015

Alex Hern, writing for The Guardian:

Mac users faced trouble with their apps overnight after the security certificate Apple uses to prevent piracy expired late on Wednesday. Applications downloaded from the Mac App Store were temporarily unavailable from 10pm UK time, when a security certificate expired, five years after its creation, with no replacement immediately available.

Even once Apple fixed the error, issuing a new certificate for the apps (with an expiry date of April 2035, this time), users were still faced with problems. Those who could not connect to the internet couldn’t verify the new certificate, while those who had forgotten their password or couldn’t log in to iCloud for some other reason are also unable to use the downloaded apps until they can log in to the service.

I used to manage various SSL and other security certificates in previous jobs. And I used to have a calendar event around three monts before each of them had to be renewed to be sure that everything was renewed long before they expired.

I think Gruber’s response is more or less perfect:

Inexcusable for a service that is absolutely essential to users and developers.

I have to re-download a bunch of apps because of this crap. Apple: get your shit together. This isn’t that hard, just use Calendar.app.

Sen. Ted Cruz

November 09, 2015

There’s a very fine line between what Cruz said and the fact that the Constitution forbids a religious test for public office. Cruz didn’t say atheists couldn’t run, only that they weren’t “fit” for the position. He’s entitled to his opinion and we’re entitled to think he’s an ignorant fool.

This is a part of American politics I don’t understand; why should it matter if a Presidential candidate believes in a God or not?

1Password for Teams

November 07, 2015

This looks great, and I think it will solve a lot of problem for many teams, my only concern is the pricing, $4.99 per person per month can get really pricy.

Awt Facebook Forcing Some Team Members To Switch From Iphone To Android

November 07, 2015

I had a similar experience in 2012, my phone died, and I told my boss I’d rather have a iPhone than a Android. And my boss told me that he didn’t want that, because I was developing an Android app. I responeded by telling them to stop paying for my contract, and by ordering a iPhone 4S, and most of all: by looking for a new job.

CGP Grey

November 07, 2015

I have had the same feeling during the last few weeks, and I’m going to start doing something about it soon. The solution for me will be to set a hard limit on the number of podcasts I listen to, the number of sites I subscribe to, and the number of twitter followers I have.

Stephen King, Not Just the Guy Who Makes Monsters – The New York Times

November 07, 2015

There’s a story Stephen King can’t resist telling. He was shopping for cinnamon buns and potato chips one day when a woman approached him. She told him that she didn’t care for horror stories like the ones he wrote, and preferred uplifting stories, like “The Shawshank Redemption.” When Mr. King told her he wrote that, too, she didn’t believe him.
